The Science
Botulinum toxin, commonly known as Botox®, is a naturally occurring protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This toxin works by blocking the transmission of chemical signals from the nerves that cause muscles to contract. As a result, the affected muscles remain in a relaxed state until the nerve signals can recover. This recovery period typically lasts about 8 to 12 weeks.
The Botulinum toxin is injected directly into the targeted muscle where this process begins.
